Turban Style Headband DIY - Part 2
I know a lot of people have been having some trouble with the old Turban Style Headband DIY that Kaitlin had posted, so I decided to make the headband myself and write a tutorial with some more photos (and even a video!). Please check out the original tutorial as well – Kaitlin is a much better model than I am
Hopefully this will clear up any issues you’ve been having! If there’s still anything that’s unclear or you’re stuck on a step please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to help!
Let’s get started!
First, you need to gather your supplies – for this project you’ll need:
- Sewing Machine/Tools to hand sew your headband
- Fabric – Something stretchy works best. I used a Jersey Knit in Black
- Scissors, Ruler, Your favourite sewing tools
Now you’re going to cut two strips of fabric, both measuring 8″ x 24″ – Mine seems to fit a little loose, so if you like a tight fit trim this down an inch or two.
Once your strips are cut, fold them in half lengthwise (you should now have strips that measure 4″ x 24″) – and sew down the open edge.
When your strips are sewn into tubes, turn them inside out so that your raw edges are on the inside. You should have a perfect looking tube
Now we’re going to “link” the tubes together. I know this was one of the tricky parts of the original tutorial, so I made a quick little video (enjoy the cheesy music)!
Hopefully you’ve got your headband linked together!
Next, I sewed each tube together so that I had two little circles linked in the middle. This was just for my own benefit and isn’t really necessary. I just think it’s easier to get to the final step with two loose ends instead of 4! After this is complete, turn each tube inside out so your raw edge is on the inside.
Next, I pinned together the two sides to get them ready to sew into the one piece headband.
If you took the extra step of sewing each side together first, then you’ll want to make sure your seams are facing outward at this point.
Now set your sewing machine to the “Zig Zag Stitch” – you’ll want a fairly wide stitch width and a short stitch length.
If you’re hand sewing, you can go ahead and sew the headband together any way you feel comfortable. If your machine doesn’t have a Zig Zag stitch setting, you’ll have to pin your headband one piece on top of the other, instead of just side by side.
Now it’s time to Zig Zag Stitch your headband together! I made the mistake of not using a needle meant for elastic and broke a needle (it almost flew into my eye! Doh!), so if you have needles meant for elastic on hand it does make your life much easier!
Once your headband is sewn and in one piece, turn the whole thing inside out! You should have something that looks like this (probably a little neater though):
Now all you have to do is put it on and show it off to your friends!
I hope this version of the tutorial helped you out a little! Again, if you have any questions just leave a comment and I’ll try my best to help! Or, if you have any tips on how to get this made a different way, I’d love to hear them!
